Welcome to the 2nd International 4dBarn Dairy Welfare HYBRID Seminar 2024

For the progressive dairy producers, veterinarians and experts from the dairy industry

Seminar is held in Hyvinkää Finland December 3-5, 2024 @ Hotel Sveitsi. This time we offer also virtual participation!

All participants will have access to the recording for one month.

A Professor in the Food Animal Production Medicine section of the University of Wisconsin- Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine.

Nigel Cook is a Professor in the Food Animal Production Medicine section of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine. He qualified as a veterinarian in 1992 and worked in a large food animal clinic in Southern England for four years before moving to the Royal Veterinary College, Hertfordshire, where he spent three years as lecturer and head of the Large Animal Ambulatory Clinic. Since 1999 he has been in Wisconsin, teaching veterinary students, performing research and developing outreach to improve dairy cattle well-being. His particular interests include lameness prevention, cow comfort and improving facility design. He developed The Dairyland Initiative – a resource to drive the creation of welfare friendly cattle housing in 2010. He is currently Chair of the Department of Medical Sciences, Past President of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and was awarded the WVMA Veterinarian of the Year in 2019 and the AABP Award of Excellence in 2021.

Dr. Kelly Barratt graduated from the University of Guelph, Ontario Veterinary College in 2005. She practiced as a large animal veterinarian and was a part owner of a group of veterinary hospitals, Heartland Veterinary Services/Animal Hospitals, based in south western Ontario, Canada. Her primary area of focus was dairy herd health with a special interest in milk quality, welfare and non-traditional roles for food animal veterinarians. Dr. Barratt represented Canadian veterinarians as the only practicing vet on the recent update to the Canadian Dairy Code of Practice for the care and handling if dairy cattle, the document on which the Dairy Farmers of Canada’s national quality assurance program, proAction, is based. She was the recipient of the Ontario Association of Bovine Practitioners “Award of Excellence” in 2017 and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners “Bovine Practitioner of the Year” 2021. In 2022, after almost 18 years in private practice, Dr. Barratt assumed the role of Director of Animal Welfare with Saputo where she ensures the implementation of Saputo’s Animal Welfare policy globally, engages with industry partners and advocates for the continued understanding and advancement of dairy animal welfare. She lives with her spouse and 2 young sons on a 60 cow dairy farm near Ayton, Ontario, Canada.

Christophe Lafougère is the CEO of the consulting and research company GIRA, a company specialising in the world of agri-food.
Since joining GIRA more than 30 years ago, he has led numerous strategic consulting, due diligence and research assignments throughout the food chain. He also oversees all of Gira's consulting activities in the dairy sector.
He created the Gira Dairy Club 14 years ago, whose members include 26 of the world's largest dairies of which Valio. It is a single qualitative and quantitative forecasting basis for all major countries of dairy production, consumption and trade in the world and covers all issues affecting milk production (from the farm to the shop) and dairy raw materials in the short and medium term. Christophe is well-known throughout the dairy industry and is a regular speaker at major international dairy events.
For the last 49 years, Gira is also producing a Gira Meat club. This club covers the 4 types of meat in more than 40 countries around the world and provide a real-world Meat Market Outlook. Latest edition presentation has been on the 6th of December 2023 and end of February 2024 in Asia.

An Emeritus Professor and was the State Extension livestock specialist in the Biological Systems Engineering Department at the University of Wisconsin.
Kammel received his doctorate in 1985 and has worked in the area of dairy and livestock housing design and management with thousands of dairy farms in Wisconsin, the USA and internationally. He is author of several chapters in the Midwest Plan Service Dairy Freestall Housing and Equipment Handbook and the Large Dairy Herd Management Book developed by American Dairy Science Association. He received the University of Wisconsin – Madison College of Agriculture 2014 Pound Extension for his extension activity.
