David Kammel, Jouni Pitkaranta and Virpi Kurkela wrote this article to explain the design process that can create a labor efficient ASM barn design. Making sure the barn is designed to implement a management plan developed by the dairy farmer can provide them the confidence in working in the barn after it is built and realize the labor savings that they planned for. A focus on cow comfort, pen size and number of AMS units per pen, orientation of the AMS units, a fetch pen, central handling area and designing a barn for one person to do the job efficiently are keys in designing a barn that is successful and labor efficient.
